What a wonderful 10 days! We had already been to Benguerra Lodge but before it was renewed a few years ago. We were delighted at the standard of the accomodation – we stayed in a Casita – and the lodge in general. Staff were all friendly, helpful but unobtrusive – nothing seemed to be too much trouble – and the flexibility to have meals served on the deck in front of our room was a joy. Almost as good as breakfast in bed. And they offer free laundry!

We ate locally caught, nicely cooked fish every day and drank a little more wine that usual. And that’s perhaps the only down side; the drinks are pricey due to transport costs but we had paid extra for “all inclusive” which meant we could drink whatever we liked, whenever the fancy took us!

The setting is beautiful, the sea was warm, the beach clean and extensive and the sun shone. We rested for 10 blissful days and progressed to our next destination, relaxed and de-stressed.

If you want bright lights, late nights and noise, this isn’t the place for you but if you want to relax, unwind, eat (and drink!) well and leave wishing you could stay for a few extra days, then go to Benguerra Lodge. We will certainly return.

We had an amazing experience at Benguerra Lodge beginning with our welcoming committee and followed by incredible hospitality thoughout our visit. The accomodations were clean, spacious and on the beach…awesome. The food was excellent including the presentation. We had the choice of eating at the main lodge or having meals prepared on our own private deck. There were many choices of activities…our favourites being deep sea fishing and walking about the island meeting the islanders. It’s a beautiful place just to relax.

We spent the last four days of our honeymoon at Benguerra Lodge (October 2011). The views are beyond beautiful and the staff goes out of its way to accommodate you. The food was fresh, delicious, and far exceeded our expectations! The casitas open-up to the beautiful Indian Ocean, yet they provide ample privacy. Our “butler” (Santos) was extremely nice, helpful, and always went above and beyond.

There are only only two negatives: Given the price i) we expected the beds to be more comfortable and ii) we felt that the staff constantly pushed the overpriced alcohol, scuba/snorkel, horseback riding, etc.

All in all, we really enjoyed our stay, loved the food, and would highly recommend Benguerra Lodge. Truly beautiful.

We stayed 5 days in a villa with our own private butler and housekeeper. Both men were SO attentive and personable. The food was outstanding at every meal, and always included fresh fish and seafood, cooked to perfection.
If you are looking for a place to relax that includes sun, white sand, excellent food, and attentive staff, this is the place. I also liked the fact that the resort contributed to projects that helped the local people on the island.

We spent 5 days at Benguerra Lodge in May, 2011 as a break from safaris in Botswana and Namibia. I am writing this in October, 2011 and I am still thinking about the place. We knew we booked into a rustic resort– we longed for a barefoot paradise with white sand beaches, fantastic snorkelling, good deep sea fishing, horseback riding on the beach and some relaxation interspersed with some island explorations. We got all that and more.

I read some of the other reviews about the food, spotty cleaning, and high costs of the place. When you consider where you are–an island off a nation in rural africa that has seen years of war, where there are no basic infrastructure services such as electricity and running water available (they have electric generators and water wells), and yet guests enjoy an amazing remote beach experience with all sorts of comforts , I think Benguerra Lodge deserves a full thumbs up. Sally is a competent manager who keeps an eye out to ensure all guests are enjoying themselves. Alex is a super island guide who took us to the school for a visit and then to the most gorgeous remote beaches. Jose was our fabulous butler who took such good care of us. Lucy took us on a wonderful, leisurely horseback riding adventure along the tidelines and through the hills. Chris took us out to 2 mile reef for an outstanding snorkelling trip and Graham the fishing guide helped my husband bring in a 300 pound hammerhead shark (a highlight of the entire trip!!). Our casita was charming and comfortable, and the food was fine. The helicopter ride to and from the island is nothing short of breathtaking looking over the turquoise sea dotted with white sand islands.

Would definitely recommend the Lodge, and all it offers, and would love to return one day.

This is the utmost beautiful place on Earth – somewhere you’d love to be. Relaxing, sunny days with few clouds, beautiful white-powder soft sand, turquoise, crystal clear warm water…. We had a fabulous honeymoon here, definitely to be recommended. Food fresh and simple, casitas very comfortable with views of the sea. Everyone very friendly. We had a spectacular picnic on a beautiful beach with not a soul in sight. Our snorkeling trip was one of th best we have done, spectacular shallow coral reef with a beautiful variety of colourful fish life…..

Benguerra Lodge was the perfect place to unwind after a week’s gorilla tracking in Rwanda.

Its villas, casitas and cabanas are well spread out over a long length of beach assuring far more seclusion than the two other resorts on the island.

Deliberately eschewing unnecessary modernity, you won’t find in-room wi-fi here, or a television anywhere in the hotel. And while there is a mobile signal, it isn’t sufficient to stoke a BlackBerry with messages so don’t come here if you need to stay in touch. Far from being a disadvantage, this all goes to produce a rare oasis of carefree calm.

Delicious and varied meals were deftly prepared by Feliciano under the expert supervision of Simon, who is in the process of reviewing the menu to draw even more heavily on local produce in the future.

An excellent dive centre offered the full range of PADI courses with terrific instructor : student ratios. The dive sites within reach of Benguerra boast a huge array of reef life, as well as whales, dolphins and dudong.

In addition to diving, the hotel offers serious fishing as well as its own spa and a range of simple activities, including island tours, castaway picnics and sunset dhow cruises.

Together with the idyllic location, it was the atmosphere created by the staff that made the experience so memorable. The time they devote to getting to know the guests and to introducing them to one another engendered a feeling much more akin to a house party in contrast with the derivatively-sterile atmospheres of most exclusive resorts.

We researched many many locations to spend our 30th wedding anniversary with our adult children, and finally chose Benguerra Lodge based on the reviews and a magazine article. From the moment we boarded our helicopter to our wistful return 5 days later, it was superb. The staff is wonderful; they gently advise regarding activities, and leave you tactfully to yourselves. The casitas are lovely, the diving instructor is charming, the guest advisors are friendly, the chef has great stories. And the food was fabulous, which was an important criteria, since our daughter is a chef and we would have all been miserable if the cuisine had been under par. Our “butler” mischieveously encouraged to us to “live it up”, and we did. Many special treats were wonderful surprises, and we just couldn’t have had a better time. We would go back in a second.
